Each of these pillars is established and maintained by habits and choices. When we face a “fork in the road” our habits need to become so ingrained that it is second nature to pick the best choice for our health and life. At the point of the choice, when it becomes habit and second nature, it will not seem like you are depriving yourself, because you know the consequences of how the poor choice will make you feel. You will be lifting yourself up!
Below are broad descriptions of each pillar and are the base habits to which we can take our health and lives back into our own hands!
Nutrition: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” – Michael Pollan. No matter your nutritional preference, they all emphasis the same thing… EAT WHOLE FOODS!
Sleep: 7-9 hours of sleep each night (even on the weekends!). Develop a bedtime routine to help your body and mind relax and prepare for sleep. (Some amazing and wonderful things happen during sleep!)
Exercise: 3-5 days per week at a minimum of 30 minutes. Pick a modality (running, weightlifting, CrossFit, TRX, HIIT, etc.) that you truly ENJOY!
Mindfulness: Develop a practice to bring awareness and intention to your thoughts and perceptions throughout the day. Slow down, be present and grateful.
Connection: Grow, build and sustain deep meaningful relationships with (most importantly) yourself and others. “We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn
Environment: De-clutter your space, use non-toxic utensils, cookware, bake ware, storage containers, cleaning products and personal care products.
This is the ground work and basics to a happy and healthy life. It can seem extremely overwhelming, however if you break it down to working on one pillar at a time and further breaking it down to building one habit at a time, it is all achievable. Overtime you will make progress and it will all become second nature. Working with a health coach or holistic practitioner of your choice, (as I have mentioned before) is another way to have someone who is genuinely in your corner helping you develop SUSTAINABLE habits that fit YOUR lifestyle.
